McGinley delays Ryder Cup wildcard announcement

Paul McGinley is pushing back the Ryder Cup wildcard announcement by a day in hopes of avoiding what happened in 2010.

The European captain originally planned to unveil his three wildcard selections on Monday, Sept. 2, but that date coincides with the final round of the Deutsche Bank Championship, which has a scheduled Monday finish because of Labor Day.

That means that both McGinley (European Tour headquarters) and U.S. skipper Tom Watson (TBD) will announce their captain’s picks on the same day.

For McGinley, the memories from 2010 appear fresh. That year, Paul Casey and Justin Rose learned that they had been passed over by then-captain Colin Montgomerie during the final round at TPC Boston. Suffice to say, it made for an awkward afternoon.

“Realistically,” McGinley said Wednesday, “I think it will have minimal effect, but out of respect for any players involved, I want to allow them to finish that tournament before I call them with news, one way or another.”
