McIlroy bounces back with 69

ST. ANDREWS, Scotland – Rory McIlroy continued his roller-coaster Open Championship. And, after 11 competitive rounds at the Old Course, the 21-year-old still hasn’t shot a single round in the 70s.

He’s shot 10 rounds in the 60s and one in the 80s.

McIlroy turned heads in Round 1 when he shot 63, then turned more heads Friday when he followed it up with a less-than-spectacular 80. The youngster from Northern Ireland was 4 under after 16 but made a double bogey on the 17th when his 7-iron approach sailed 210 yards, ending behind the hole up against the stone wall. He had to chip back toward the 18th tee box, chipped to 12 feet and two-putted for a double bogey. He rebounded with an easy birdie on the final hole and shot 69 to sit at 4 under par for the championship.

“I feel as if I responded quite well after all that happened yesterday,” McIlroy said. “I’m not going to let one round of golf get me down.

“I know what I’m capable of on this golf course.”
