McIlroy cards 75 in Round 2 at Lytham

LYTHAM ST. ANNES, England – Rory McIlroy played himself out of contention Friday at the Open Championship, shooting a second-round 75 on a day when Brandt Snedeker proved a number was to be had.

McIlroy shot 67 Thursday and was out with an early tee time Friday. He was even-par on the round througheight holes but made double bogey on the par-3 ninth hole when he found a bunker and took two shots to get out of it. That blip on the scorecard dashed momentum and the 23-year-old from Northern Ireland could not recover.

“It wasn't the best day out there,” McIlroy said. “I was doing pretty well just to hang in there around par on the front nine and making a double on the ninth there was sort of the turning point in the round.”

When McIlroy finished he was at 5 over par and in a tie for 55th place. He will play the weekend, but has little hopes of collecting a second majorchampionship.
