Rory McIlroy is too young to be working part-time. The world No. 2 made sure he would get in a full work week before defending the U.S. Open crown next week in San Francisco.

The Ulsterman not only make the cut on Friday for the first time in his last four worldwide starts, but is in the lead at the FedEx St. Jude Classic in Memphis, Tenn.

With a birdie at the last, McIlroy capped off a second-round, 5-under 65 at TPC Southwind to lead by a shot at 7 under par.

J.B. Holmes, Jeff Maggert and Kevin Stadler are part of the trio tied for second place.

John Merrick is alone in fifth at 5 under.

Five players are tied for sixth, three behind McIlroy. Padraig Harrington, who played with McIlroy the first two days, is in the group, along with Ken Duke, Ryder Cup captain Davis Love III, Seung-yul Noh and Chad Campbell.
