THOUSAND OAKS, Calf. – Rory McIlroy seemed to diffuse much of the uproar over losing the Rookie of the Year Award to Rickie Fowler on Sunday at the Chevron World Challenge.
“I really didn’t want it. I’m not really a rookie,” said McIlroy, who was the only rookie to win in 2010 (Quail Hollow Championship) and finished third in two majors. “When I joined the Tour I was in the top 10 in the World Ranking and Rickie has had an unbelievable season.”
McIlroy, 21, added that he didn’t win the Rookie of the Year Award his first year on the European Tour in 2008.
“Rickie was just out of college, played the Walker Cup (last year), that’s what a rookie should be,” he said.
That’s good enough for “Shag Bag.”
