The young superstar was in the top 10 early in the afternoon and ultimately shot 79, including a triple bogey and a double bogey on the final nine holes, where he shot 42. McIlroy is tied for 44th place at 5 over par, 12 shots behind the leaders.
McIlroy became unraveled on the 11th hole when he hit a skunky approach shot into the water left of the green. The result was triple bogey.
“I never recovered from that,” he said.
McIlroy found water on the par-5 15th hole when he went for the green in two shots. His ball hit the green, but the rolled back into the water. He made double bogey there, and followed with a bogey on 16.
“It’s disappointing, especially after such a good start,” McIlroy said. “I feel like I was playing well and feel like I have been playing well coming in here.”
