Not even a (relatively) down year has dimmed Rory McIlroy’s star power. The 24-year-old still landed on Forbes’ annual list of 30 Under 30, a compilation, it says, of the brightest stars in 15 different fields under the age of 30.
Quoth Forbes: “Already a two-time major champion at 24. Since early 2013, he’s landed sponsorships with Nike, Bose and Swiss watchmaker Omega. Even in a down year, he’s a face of the sport.”
McIlroy is the only golfer on the list, but there are some athletes whose profiles are marginally boosted by our sport.
Also on the list were Olympic skier Lindsey Vonn, 29, whom Forbes notes is “no doubt NBC’s primary female face” of the upcoming Winter Olympics and Tiger Woods’ girlfriend; and former tennis No. 1 Caroline Wozniacki, 23, recently engaged to McIlroy and the seventh highest-paid female athlete ($13.6 million) in the past year.
At this time next year, it’s likely that McIlroy will still land on this under-30 list, regardless of what kind of season he has in 2014. And who knows? He could be joined by Jordan Spieth, who turns 21 in July.
