CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Add a new name to Dave Stockton Sr.’s ever-expanding list of PGA Tour putting disciples. Rory McIlroy had his first session with the “putting whisperer” on Monday at Quail Hollow.
“He called a couple weeks ago and said he’d been thinking about it for a while,” said Stockton, whose other Tour clients include Phil Mickelson and J.B. Holmes. “It had nothing to do with the Masters.”
McIlroy began the final round of last month’s Masters with a four-stroke lead, went triple bogey-bogey-double bogey at the turn and signed for a closing 80 to tie for 15th place.
“He missed a 3 footer at No. 4 (on Sunday) and said, ‘I knew I was going to miss it,’” Stockton said.
