Rory McIlroy is officially out of The Players Championship.
He confirmed today that he’ll join world No. 1 Lee Westwood in skipping the PGA Tour’s flagship event at TPC Sawgrass in Ponte Vedra Beach May 12-15. The news means golf's 'fifth major' will be played without at least two players currently among the top 10 in the world rankings. McIlroy’s No. 7 this week.
“I’ve decided no holes at Sawgrass is better than my usual 36 holes,” McIlroy tweeted today.
McIlroy has missed the cut in both of his starts at The Players. He’s never broken par in four rounds there.
Chubby Chander, McIlroy's agent, explains the decision tonight on Golf Central (6 p.m., ET).
