LYTHAM ST. ANNES, England – Rory McIlroy sprinted out of the gates at the Open Championship with an opening-round 67 but has struggled to find his swing over the last 36 holes here at Royal Lytham & St. Annes.
After a second-round 75 that sent him out of contention, McIlroy followed with a 73 Saturday in the third round to stand at 5 over par, 15 shots behind leader Brandt Snedeker, who had not teed off when McIlroy finished.
“Whenever you're not confident in the shots that you're trying to hit, then it is tough to sort of trust it,” McIlroyd said. “I'm frustrated. But that's the way it is. And you just have to get on with it and keep trying and keep practicing and stay patient until it turns around.”
Playing with Padraig Harrington, McIlroy made bogey on Nos. 4, 5, 8 and 12 and made his lone birdie of the day on the 16th hole.
