TURNBERRY, Scotland – Miguel Angel Jimenez is a unique dude. Nicknamed the Mechanic, he has those long, flowing curls mostly tucked away under his hat and his love for fine cigars and high performance sportscars are well documented.
But as much as he likes his stogies, he makes a point not to smoke during tournament rounds.
'I smoke on the practice and pro-ams, but not in tournament round,' he said. 'I smoke as soon as I finish and before.'
Jimenez, 45, smoked the field in the first round with a 64 to take the lead. This is his 17th British Open and he's not had great success. Other than a third-place tie in 2001, he's never finished in the top 10 and he's missed the cut seven times.
