Micheel missing the Wanamaker

RSS

CHASKA, Minn. – Listening to Padraig Harrington talk about winning the PGA Championship at the Champions Dinner Tuesday night, Shaun Micheel became aware of an empty feeling.

Thinking back on the PGA Championship he won at Oak Hill six years ago, he realized something’s missing in his life.

The Wanamaker Trophy.

Micheel doesn’t have one.

“You have to buy one,” Micheel said. “I don’t think people realize that, and it costs $40,000 or so. I just haven’t gotten around to doing it.

“I listened to Padraig talk about how he had people over to see it, because they want to touch it. It reminded me I still haven’t purchased mine. Part of it is I’m just not sure what to do with it. Do I put it in a glass case in my home? That seems a little ostentatious to me. It’s like saying, `Hey, look what I won.’’’

Micheel does have that magical club he used to hit one of the great closing shots in major championship history, but it isn't on display, either. The Cleveland TA2 7-iron he used to hit the winning shot is boxed up in his house in Memphis. From 175 yards, he hit that 7-iron to 2 inches to beat Chad Campbell at Oak Hill in ’03.

“I’ll never part with that club,” Micheel said.
