Shaun Micheel's mother, Donna, died Thursday after a yearlong battle with lung cancer. She was 64.
Micheel often has said this year that he was playing golf for his mother, who said her desire was for her son to continue playing despite her grave condition. He has played in 20 events this year, made 14 cuts and his best finish was a fourth at the John Deere Classic and a fourth-place tie at the St. Jude Classic. Micheel tied for 33rd last week at the Frys.com Open, where he told reporters he was going to take the next several weeks off to be with his mother, who doctors had said had four to six weeks to live.
'Every day that we have her on this earth is a blessing,' Micheel said at the John Deere Classic. Donna Micheel was diagnosed with lung cancer during the Zurich Classic in 2009 but that cancer had since metastasized to her liver and brain.
Donna Micheel requested that donations be made to the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Mid-South in lieu of flowers.
