Mickelson makes his 40th birthday plans

PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. – Phil Mickelson turns 40 Wednesday.

After his news conference Tuesday at the U.S. Open, he was asked how he intended to celebrate.

“I’m going to play Cypress,” he said.

That would be Cypress Point, the famed Alister MacKenzie design and ultra exclusive neighbor to Pebble Beach.

Bob Hope once joked about the nature of a membership drive at Cypress Point.

“They drove out 40 members,” he said.
