Mickelson gives Fowler thumbs up for Ryder Cup team

RSS

SHEBOYGAN, Wis. – Phil Mickelson would love to see Rickie Fowler become a captain’s pick, and his opinion matters with American Ryder Cup captain Corey Pavin.

After Friday’s round, Pavin said he would speak to all eight players who make the American team on points to see who they’d like him to select. Pavin said it’s among the resources he’ll use to make his four captain’s picks on Sept. 7.

Fowler started the PGA Championship 17th in points.

“I think Rickie would be a great pick,” Mickelson said after his round Sunday at the PGA Championship.
“Because he’s got such a solid game, that to get him in the mix right away would be great for American golf. But I don’t know, with so much youth, that’s what Pavin wants to do. I’m not trying to lobby. I’m just saying we have a lot of good young American players that are going to add a lot of value to the team.”

Fowler packed up his golf bag after shooting 77 Sunday disappointed he won't make the American Ryder Cup team on points but hopeful Pavin will seriously consider him. There are three events left before Pavin will make his four captain’s picks. Fowler will take next week off but play the FedEx Cup's Barclays and Deutsche Bank Championship events. They will be his last two chances to impress Pavin.

“We’ve spent some time together, played a couple practice rounds,” Fowler said. “He knows what I have done in the past, that I played two Walker Cups. He is doing his homework. I’m not going to be mad if he doesn’t pick me. It’s going to be awesome if I do get the chance to play, but, hopefully, it won’t be my last chance.”
