Mickelson late entry to next week's Scottish Open

RSS

After missing the cut and shooting his seventh consecutive over-par round on the PGA Tour, Phil Mickelson committed at the last minute to next week's Scottish Open on the European Tour.

Mickelson was offered the final exemption by new title sponsor Aberdeen Asset Management, which he accepted to play at Castle Stuart, according to the U.K.-based Daily Mail.

A year ago, Mickelson finished T-58 in the event, shortened to 54 holes because of torrential rain which caused mudslides and damage to the course. The next week, Mickelson finished second to Darren Clarke at the British Open – his best-ever result in the year's third major.

Aberdeen Asset Management takes over for Barclays, which had been title sponsor of the event for the last 10 years. Mickelson is also sponsored by Barclays, whose now-former CEO Bob Diamond resigned this week over charges he oversaw a manipulation of a key interest rate.
