Mickelson skips pro-am, arriving late at BMW

LAKE FOREST, Ill. – Though Conway Farms Golf Club is hosting the BMW Championship for the first time, apparently Phil Mickelson feels ready to tee it up this week without much practice.

The reigning British Open champion opted to withdraw from Wednesday’s pro-am at the BMW Championship, citing personal reasons. Mickelson declined to meet with the media and will reportedly not arrive in the Chicago area until Wednesday evening in advance of his 11:59 a.m. CT tee time Thursday.

Currently sixth in the FedEx Cup standings, Mickelson will play the first two rounds at Conway Farms alongside Matt Kuchar and Graham DeLaet. He trails DeLaet by 44 points for the fifth spot in the points race entering this week, a position that would allow him to control his own destiny at next week’s Tour Championship.

Per PGA Tour guidelines, each player is allowed to skip two official pro-ams per year. This is the second such withdrawal for Mickelson, who also opted out of the Shell Houston Open pro-am in March.
