Mickelson trying to follow Woods for ninth time

RSS

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. – Tiger Woods owns 75 career PGA Tour victories. Phil Mickelson has 40. So it would stand to reason that two of the game’s biggest stars have won their share of tournaments on back-to-back weeks.

In fact, it has happened on eight occasions. The first took place in February 2000, when Woods won the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am and Mickelson claimed what was then the Buick Invitational the next week. The last time it happened was September 2009, when Woods won the BMW Championship and Mickelson won the next event on the schedule – after a bye week – at the Tour Championship.

These numbers are relevant because following Woods’ victory at last week’s Farmers Insurance Open, Mickelson owns a four-stroke lead at the Waste Management Phoenix Open through one round, thanks to an opening score of 11-under 60.
