Mickelson, Westwood perfect fit for Bethpage captains

ATLANTA – The long awaited news that Bethpage’s Black Course will host the 2024 Ryder Cup, along with the 2019 PGA Championship, gave way to some real speculation – who might captain the ’24 teams?

Phil Mickelson would be the easy option for U.S. captain. The “people’s player” came up agonizingly short twice at the “people’s course” – finishing second at the 2002 and ’09 U.S. Opens played at Bethpage.

For the European side, Lee Westwood – who finished fifth at the 2012 Barclays played at Bethpage – seems an easy choice for the 45th matches.

Lefty would be 54 for the matches. As for Westwood …

“I’ll be (51) then,” Westwood tweeted. “Big gulp!”
