Monty or McGinley: Who will captain Euros in '14?

On Thursday, Jose Maria Olazabal named three of his four vice captains – Darren Clarke, Thomas Bjorn and Paul McGinley – for next month’s Ryder Cup at Medinah. (The fourth vice captain will be announced on Aug. 27.) McGinley, who holed the winning putt for Europe in 2002, already has expressed a desire to lead the Europeans when the Ryder Cup heads to Gleneagles in 2014, but then again so has Scotsman Colin Montgomerie, the victorious 2010 captain.
So, who’s the favorite to land the gig?
McGinley, 45, twice has been captain of the Great Britain and Ireland team for the Seve Trophy, a competition that pits players from GB&I and Continental Europe. Speaking to reporters at this week’s Thailand Open on the OneAsia Tour, McGinley said, “Obviously a lot of people have mentioned my name, and that is nice. … It is a position I have always enjoyed, but we will just have to wait and see.”
Montgomerie, too, has said that if an offer was extended, he would captain the Euros in ’14. As the eight-time Ryder Cup participant told Golf Monthly (UK) earlier this month: “I’ll do anything I can to help the European team. If the European Tour want me to be captain, I will be.”
The last Ryder Cup captain to serve more than one term was Bernard Gallacher, who led the Europeans in 1991-95 (three competitions).
Given his connections to Gleneagles, though, Monty could very well follow suit.
