Mud and a river named heartbreak

FARMINGDALE, N.Y. – We won't crown a champion here at the 109th Water Polo Open until Sunday or Monday or July, but give Bethpage's maintenance staff a big silver chalice to celebrate their ability to squeeze enough water out of the Black to make it playable.

Although the course is still damp, the thought occurred as we walked down the 18th that at this time yesterday the fairway was little more than mud and a river named heartbreak.
