FARMINGDALE, N.Y. – Andy Barnes, the ever-present sidekick to this year’s U.S. Open surprise Ricky, isn’t always his brother’s bagman. He’s got a day job, assistant men’s golf coach at the University of Arizona, and can play a little himself.
In fact, Andy qualified for the 1999 Open at Pinehurst No. 2 and enlisted the services of Ricky as caddie for the week, but, as Andy tells it, Ricky isn’t much of a looper.
“We’re on the first tee and he’s fumbling with the yardage book. I ask him what we got and he says 170-something,” Andy Barnes said. “I said, ‘Says here 145.’ He’s below average (as a caddie).”
Through three rounds the younger brother is proving to be an above-average Open frontrunner.
