HONOLULU – It would take a pretty spectacular result for John Daly to retain his PGA Tour playing privileges this week, but for a guy who once won a major championship as the ninth alternate, such surprises have become standard operating procedure.
In order for Daly, who is playing on a non-exempt medical extension, to keep his card, he will need to earn $551,940 at this week’s Sony Open, which means either a first or solo second-place finish.
He’s off to a good start, though, posting an opening-round, 4-under 66 that included five birdies and just a single bogey. Daly is in a share of fifth place, three strokes behind early leader Sang-Moon Bae.
If Daly fails to earn that $551,940 this week, he will be forced to play the remainder of the 2013-14 season out of the Past Champions category.
