RANCHO MIRAGE, Calif. – Sometimes a new piece of equipment makes all the difference.
Kraft Nabisco defending champion Stacy Lewis ditched the cold putter she started the event with for a hot one and posted a 6-under-par 66 Sunday to make a hard run up the leaderboard. It equaled her low round in a major championship.
Tied for 29th going into the final round, Lewis was tied for fourth when she signed her scorecard. She secured her sixth top-10 finish in a major after flirting with the cut line on Friday.
“I wasn’t really feeling very good about my game, but I just kept working on it and finally something clicked today,” Lewis said. “I knew I was pretty far back and needed some help.”
Lewis, 26, switched putters after the first round, going away from a TaylorMade mallet style to a Anser style with more loft. She didn’t make the switch easily. She arrived at Mission Hills at 6:30 a.m. the morning of the second round and gave four new putters a tryout.
