Nicklaus on anchor ban: We need one set of rules

RSS

With the European Tour expected to support the governing bodies’ proposed ban on anchoring Monday, the PGA Tour, it appears, may be alone in its opposition.

Jack Nicklaus said Sunday that the Tour would be wise to follow the governing bodies’ lead, if only for the good of the game.

“I’ve been very neutral on it,” he said in the NBC broadcast booth, “but the thing that would disturb me was if the Tour took another position other than the USGA’s final position. The Tour has always played by one set of rules … and I think we should stay that way.

“It may be to some of the fellas’ detriment, one way or the other, but what I think the ultimate decision should be is the ruling bodies of golf and not the Tour.”

The 90-day comment period expired last Thursday. The USGA and R&A are expected to render a final decision on the anchor ban this spring, though the rule would not take effect until 2016.
