AUGUSTA, Ga. – In a sight that never gets old, and under hazy skies, Arnold Palmer, Gary Player and Jack Nicklaus officially opened the 77th playing of the Masters Tournament Thursday at Augusta National.
Palmer, dressed in gray pants and a red sweater, began the proceedings. Player, in his trademark all black, was second and Nicklaus took the anchor spot.
All three men found the fairway.
“Nobody cares where it goes,” Nicklaus declared.
“We’ve been doing it together all our lives,” Palmer said.
The only disappointment is that golf’s Big 3 didn’t complete the hole – or the round, for that matter.
Sandy Lyle, John Peterson and Nathan Smith were next up at 8 a.m. ET. Tiger Woods, Luke Donald and Scott Piercy tee off at 10:45 a.m. Defending champion Bubba Watson is playing with Ian Poulter and U.S. Amateur champion Steven Fox. They tee off at 10:34 a.m.
