No plaque for Phil at Colonial

There was talk among some members at Colonial Country Club, site of this week’s PGA Tour stop, of putting in a plaque to commemorate Phil Mickelson’s bold approach to the final hole when he won in 2008.

Mickelson called the shot, which he had to hit under one tree and over another, among the top-5 best he’s ever hit, but the proposal didn’t get out of the discussion phase because, as one Colonial member figured, the club has never built any plaques to honor Ben Hogan’s heroics at Colonial, where the Hawk won five times.

Considering Colonial is one of two courses dubbed “Hogan’s Alley,” along with Riviera Country Club in California, that seems about right.
