Torrey Pines

SAN DIEGO – Torrey Pines may be the best walk on Tour this side of the Old Course and Thursday’s sweeping views of the Pacific Ocean from the South Course made for an easy stroll.

What often gets lost amid the hype, however, is that the North Course is the more preferred pitch for locals and many Tour pros. Despite loftier credentials the South has slipped in popularity since Rees Jones’ redesign in 2001.

Asked which course he’d rather play, San Diego native Charley Hoffman once said: “Old South, new North.”
