A North-South dilemma

RSS

SAN DIEGO – Glad to see Phil Mickelson back in the hunt on the PGA Tour. He’s three strokes off the Farmers Insurance Open lead after a second-round 69, we just wish he’d make up his mind which Torrey Pines track he enjoys.

On Thursday following an opening 67 he talked about the Rees Jones changes to the South Course, which have not been popular with many of the Tour’s rank-and-file. But then on Friday he seemed to turn on the North Course, which is preferred by San Diego locals.

“The North Course is probably a great example how longer is not always better,” Lefty said of the North, which has been lengthened about 112 yards in recent years. “It’s always been a fun golf course to play, and as you get longer and longer it’s no longer a fun course. . . . I’m looking forward to playing the South the next few rounds.”

Somewhere Jones just high-fived a design associate.
