Ogilvy in danger of missing Masters after 73

RSS

HUMBLE, Texas – Geoff Ogilvy is in danger of failing to play in the Masters for the first time since 2005. His biggest mistake may wind up being his decision to play this week.

Following this week’s Shell Houston Open, the top 50 on the Official World Golf Ranking will receive invitations to the year’s first major. Currently 53rd on that list, Ogilvy would have been projected as 50th had he not teed it up, although there are plenty of variables which could have forced him further down. By competing in Houston, he can control his own destiny, but needs a 50th-place finish at the very least to secure his place in the field.

On Thursday, Ogilvy opened with a 1-over 73 on a day when scores were low.

As if he needed more motivation to get to Augusta, he has never finished worse than 39th in seven career Masters starts, with a best finish of T-4 two years ago.
