If Geoff Ogilvy listens hard enough he may hear the cheers wafting from Torrey Pines’ 18th green on Sunday. Not that the Australian will play any part in the festivities.
The surfing injury that bounced Ogilvy from the season-opening Hyundai Tournament of Champions will also force him to miss this week’s Farmers Insurance Open, which is particularly hard considering he lives about 10 minutes from Torrey Pines.
According to Ogilvy’s swing coach Dale Lynch the injury, which required 12 stitches to mend, is healing well but has kept him from practicing.
“It’s in a really bad spot for golf because it’s where most of the pressure is on that point on his (right) index finger,” Lynch said. “If it was any other spot on his hand he would be fine. But he doesn’t want to risk making an adjustment swinging with pain and then the pain goes away and you are left with the compensation and you have to fix it.”
Lynch said Ogilvy has been chipping and putting and plans to play the Waste Management Phoenix Open the first week of February. Until then, if he listens hard this week he can almost hear the action over at Torrey Pines.
