Ice breaker: Loftsson first Iceland native to compete in Tour event

Olafur Loftsson made history at the Wyndham Championship on Thursday.

The Gardabaer, Iceland, native became the first golfer from that country to compete in a PGA Tour event, posting a 2-under 68 in the opening round.

A two-time All-Atlantic 10 selection from Charlotte, the rising senior opened with a double-bogey on the 10th hole at Sedgefield CC, but that was his only blemish, as he bounced back with four birdies during the remainder of the round.

“It's a little bit strange, you know, being around these guys, but I'm not intimidated by being here,” Loftsson said during a pre-tournament press conference. “It's just a lot of fun. I'm going to enjoy these few days and enjoy this experience and try to learn as much as I can because I intend to be here in the future.”

He received a spot in this week’s field by virtue of a four-stroke victory at last week’s Cardinal Amateur, also held in Greensboro, N.C.
