Ominous start for the Americans

SAN FRANCISCO – Maybe it was nerves.

Maybe it was the fact that it was so cold you could see your breath on the first tee.

Whatever it was, it's never a good sign when your fans are trying to lift your spirits before you even reach the first green.

That was the opening Presidents Cup scene for Hunter Mahan after he pushed his drive right in a fairway bunker and then thinned a shot off the face of the bunker and up in the air and into another fairway bunker 10 yards away. Mahan's third shot was just as ugly, another low liner off the face of that second bunker.

'Shake it off, Hunter,' one fan shouted.

'Put it behind you,' shouted another.

This was before Mahan actually lost the first hole to Camilo Villegas.

A baby was crying in the stands as Mahan picked up and walked off the green.
