Overnight rain, morning winds Friday at Kiawah

KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. – The thunderclaps sounded like explosions, the lightning sparking the sky like fireworks.

And with it came rain. Lots and lots of rain.

It was nearly 4 a.m. in this sleepy island resort town when a thunderstorm of epic proportions hovered overhead. The final result was 0.85 inches of rainfall, but nothing that will too greatly affect the second round of the 94th PGA Championship.

Tournament officials reported standing water in many of the Ocean Course’s “sandy areas” on Friday morning, but tee times went off as scheduled, beginning at 7:20 a.m.

There is already more wind than at any point during the opening round, with gusts of up to 30 mph expected throughout the day.
