PITTSFORD, N.Y. – Se Ri Pak had a confession to make Friday at the Wegmans LPGA Championship.
After opening with a 2-under-par 70 to move into position to make a run at winning her fourth LPGA Championship, Pak was asked about her breakthrough victory in this event in ’98. It was her first LPGA victory and her first major championship title.
Pak confessed she didn’t even know it was a major when she was handed the trophy at the end.
Pak didn’t know she won a major until she was ushered into the media center after the trophy presentation.
“I was interviewing, and they said, `This is a major,’” Pak said. “I said, `Oh, really.’
“Nineteen ninety-eight, basically, my first season in the United States, I came directly from Korea. I didn’t know anything about it. All I know is I was just trying to join the LPGA and learn my game from the best golfers.”
Pak, 35, a Hall of Famer, has won 35 LPGA titles, five of them majors.
