Suzann Pettersen lost a golden chance to vault to No. 1 in the Rolex Women’s World Golf Rankings Sunday, but she still closed the distance to the top, moving up a spot to No. 3 in Monday’s newest rankings.
Pettersen needed a victory to overtake Jiyai Shin at the top of the rankings but she tied for second, losing in a playoff at the Bell Micro LPGA Classic. Se Ri Pak defeated Pettersen and Brittany Lincicome there.
Pettersen is agonizingly close to a brilliant season. She’s finished second three times this year and third another. She’s finished second nine times with one victory since the start of the ’08 season.
Shin is No. 1 in the world for a third consecutive week, but the race is extremely tight. Ai Miyazato is less than a tenth of a point behind her at No. 2 in the average of points used. Less than a half point separates the top four players with Pettersen .37 off the top spot and No. 4 Yani Tseng .45 back.
