PGA of America to honor Stockton's service

Dave Stockton has been named the 2012 recipient of the PGA Distinguished Service Award, the PGA of America announced on Tuesday.

The award, first given in 1988, honors outstanding individuals who display leadership and humanitarian qualities.

'I believed in giving back through golf. I had a gift as a motivational speaker and used it to help others,' Stockton said in a release. 'I have tried helping people gain a better understanding about what golf can do to help them feel better about themselves.

A two-time PGA Championship winner (1970, '76) and the winning American captain in the 1991 Ryder Cup, Stockton has also been committed throughout his career to fundraising efforts through golf to benefit a host of causes.

Stockton will receive the award on Aug. 8, ahead of the PGA Championship at Kiawah Island near Charleston, S.C.
