Tracker: Survivor

JOHNS CREEK, Ga. – His right wrist and forearm bandaged after hitting a tree root in Thursday's first round, Rory McIlroy shot 3-over 73 on Day 2 of the 93rd PGA Championship. Rex Hoggard, Randall Mell and Jason Sobel tracked McIlroy at Atlanta Athletic Club.

1:24 p.m.: McIlroy finishes his second round with a routine par at the ninth hole for a 3-over 73. Although not likely what he had in mind, given his ailing right arm it will keep him around for the weekend. A victory by any measure. (Total: 3-over 143) - RH

1:08 p.m.: One person in the McIlroy gallery who has had a quiet day is trainer Cornell Driessen, who treated the Ulsterman throughout his opening round. After a bunker-to-bunker bogey at the par-4 eighth hole, however, the 22-year-old may be in need of therapy of a different kind. (Total: 3 over through 17) - RH

12:53 p.m.: First one-armed swing in a few holes for McIlroy at the par-3 seventh, although he does make his par. It's worth noting that he is not icing his ailing right forearm, not that there is much ice to be found in Hotlanta. (Total: 2 over through 16) - RH

12:43 p.m.: McIlroy shows signs of life with a 9-footer for birdie at the sixth. Without any major damage late he will make the cut. (Total: 2 over through 15) - RH

12:31 p.m.: Much concern over McIlroy's long game, but it may be his putter that costs him a weekend tee time. The Ulsterman misses a 4-footer for birdie at the par-5 fifth hole to remain at 3 over, which likely be very close to the cut. (Total: 3 over through 14) - RH

12:13 p.m.: McIlroy makes routine par at the fourth, hits green and two putts from 25 feet. (Total: 3 over through 13) - RM

12:06 p.m.: McIlroy's driving the ball beautifully today, but his iron play and short games are shaky. After splitting another fairway at the third, McIlroy went after a treacherous left pin and missed, short siding himself in the greenside bunker. He left his bunker shot in the sand before swiping another close to make bogey. (Total: 3 over through 12) - RM

11:48 a.m.: McIlroy swatted the grass in anger with a wedge in front of the second green. He was miffed over leaving a poor chip 10 feet short. He saved par, though. This was after hitting another gargantuan drive into the fairway but missing the green short with a disappointing approach short. (Total: 2 over through 11) - RM

11:34 a.m.: At the first green, McIlroy saw a slight break to the left from 20 feet. His caddie, J.P. Fitzgerald, saw just the opposite. 'OK,' McIlroy deferred. Fitzgerald looked to have it correct. Still, McIlroy two putted for par after a nice drive with a 3-wood and decent approach to hit the green in regulation. (Total: 2 over through 10) - RM

11:13 a.m.: McIlroy unleashed a titanic drive at the 18th, showing no signs of pain as he hit the right side of this skinny fairway. Though he said he would favor a cut shot today, his right forearm must feel good because he hit a hard draw to 30 feet at the 18th green. He took a hand off the club on finish, perhaps expecting a twinge with that action requiring a more roll of the wrist. He two putted for par. (Total: 2 over through 9) - RM

10:51 a.m.: Pain returned to McIlroy at the 17th tee, but it was emotional in nature. After making birdie at 16, McIlroy rinsed his next tee shot, hitting it short in the pond. He followed up hitting wedge from the drop area to 20 feet. A nasty three putt and triple bogey moves him to 2 over. (Total: 2 over through 8) - RM

10:45 a.m.: DJ’s bunker, Sergio’s tree, Seve’s car park – might add Rory’s root to the list of major landmarks by the end of this week. Take a look at our top 10 major landmarks ( - RM

10:30 a.m.: McIlroy just self medicated. Rolling in a 50-foot putt for birdie at the 16th, McIlroy beamed with joy. He is now 1 under for the tournament. (Total: 1 under through 7) - JS

10:14 a.m.: Brilliant tee shot from McIlroy on the long par-3 15th hole, as it goes right at the flagstick and winds up about 12 feet above the hole. He missed the putt, though, and remains at even par. (Total: Even through 6) - JS

9:58 a.m.: McIlroy finishes his drive on the 14th hole with just one hand on the club, but it doesn't appear injury-related - just a good ol' fashioned pull hook. He landed in a bunker, then hit an exquisite shot to 6 feet, only to miss the birdie effort and tap in for par. He stays at even for the round and even for the tournament. (Total: Even through 5) - JS

9:43 a.m.: First sign of McIlroy's injury bothering him came on the 13th tee, as he hit an iron shot into the fairway, then winced, shook his arm a few times and examined the area. It didn't seem as troubling as during times throughout yesterday's opening round, but well worth watching. He made par on the hole to remain even for the day. (Total: Even through 4) - JS

9:26 a.m.: On yesterday's third hole of his round, McIlroy swung and hit a root, injuring his right forearm. Today? Different story. After laying up on the par-5 12th hole, he chipped on and sank a 12-foot birdie putt to move back to even par. Still no noticeable signs of discomfort from the injury. - JS

9:25 a.m.: For the second day in a row, McIlroy birdies the par-5 12th and playing partner Darren Clarke dunks his second shot in a water hazard. McIlroy may be hurting, but his fellow Ulsterman is in some serious pain right now. (Total: Even through 3) - RH

9:06 a.m.: In his first true test of the day, McIlroy's drive on No. 11 lands on the uphill slope of a fairway bunker, but he handles it without issue, reaching the green and two-putting for par. He remains at 1 over for the round. (Total: 1 over through 2) - JS

8:54 a.m.: McIlroy has replaced the 7-iron he damaged during the first round that led to his right-wrist injury. On at least three occasions McIlroy needed the 7-iron on Thursday but had to use another club. Titleist had a new club shipped to him and it was waiting for him when he got to the golf course Friday morning. - RH

8:50 a.m.: Bogey for McIlroy on the 10th hole - his first - but it may have had less to do with the wrist injury than the fact that he didn't have much of a warmup before he teed off. After an abbreviated putting session that lasted no more than five minutes, he three-putted his opener, including a missed par attempt from 3 feet away. - JS

8:48 a.m.: McIlroy's first tee shot of the second round looked like, well, his usual swing, except with tape around his wrist. If he's experiencing any early pain, there's no outward signs. - JS

8:30 a.m.: While initially believed to be an injury to his right wrist, an MRI Thursday night showed a strained tendon in Rory McIlroy's forearm.
