PGA Tour likely to allow cell phones at events next year

RSS

Golf Channel's Steve Sands has learned that the PGA Tour may allow fans to have cell phones at events next year as long as they are on a silent or vibrate setting. The Wyndham Championship was the first to attempt it at a Tour event this year and, by many accounts, it was a success.

There will be another test at the Chevron World Challenge in two weeks, then another test at the Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines. If both go off without a hitch, the regulation is expected to be put into place at some point in the season.

According to Sands, the PGA Tour has been discussing the cell phone policy for several months and feels that, in today's world, fans can become disconnected for long periods of time while on the golf course. Their hope is that allowing people to carry a cell phone while at a tournament will help grow attendance.

This new stipulation would not include the major championships, which are all governed by bodies other than the PGA Tour.
