Phil needs win to overtake Woods

RSS

With Tiger Woods’ top billing in the World Golf Ranking in jeopardy it is time for our weekly math lesson from the “pocket protectors” who run the ranking.

According to Tony Greer, who created the ranking in the early 1980s, Phil Mickelson must win this week’s event at Colonial to overtake Woods atop the ranking.

“It’s got to be a win,” Greer said. “Right now, the winner (at Colonial) will get 62 points and second place will get 32.7 (points). (Second place points) is not enough.”

Woods’ lead over Mickelson shrunk this week to .98 point from 1.25 points last week.
