Each day, until Davis Love III makes his Ryder Cup captain's picks, analysts on 'Golf Central' and 'Morning Drive' will break down the players who are vying for one of the coveted spots. Love will make his decision Sept. 4, the day after the Deutsche Bank Championship.
Today’s player under the spotlight is Hunter Mahan.
Why pick: Because only four Americans have won multiple times this year on the PGA Tour and Hunter Mahan is the only member of that elite club not already on captain Davis Love III’s squad. That the front end of his season two-fer was the WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship – where he beat European stalwart Rory McIlroy, 2 and 1, in the 36-hole final match – only makes him that much more of an asset..
Why skip: He’s posted just a single top 10 since his last victory at the Shell Houston Open in April and has almost as many rounds in the 80s (one) in his last four starts as he does in the 60s (two). Maybe most concerning is Mahan’s play under the pressure to earn his spot at Medinah. He missed the cut at the PGA Championship and Barclays and is tied 32nd through three rounds at TPC Boston.
