Pick or skip: Snedeker's Ryder Cup pros and cons

RSS

Each day, until Davis Love III makes his Ryder Cup captain's picks, analysts on 'Golf Central' and 'Morning Drive' will break down the players who are vying for one of the coveted spots. Love will make his decision Sept. 4, the day after the Deutsche Bank Championship.

Today’s player under the spotlight is Brandt Snedeker.

Why pick: Because Ryder Cups are decided on the greens and no one is better on the PGA Tour with the flat stick then Snedes – not in strokes gained-putting (first), one-putt percentage (first) or putts per round (first). That he’s also playing well, he finished second last week at The Barclays and is currently tied for 25th at the Deutsche Bank Championship, and has the personality to pair with almost anyone doesn’t hurt either.

Why skip: Have to ask Fred Couples, who sidestepped the three-time Tour winner for last year’s Presidents Cup squad, that one. Or maybe the U.S. Golf Association selection committee that snubbed him from the 2003 Walker Cup team despite a stellar resume. He’s emotional, see 2008 Masters, and inexperienced which may not be the best combination on a team that already has an abundance of both and has a close relationship with captain Davis Love III, they are both represented by the same management firm and have the same sponsor, which may hurt his chances.
