Players expect tougher conditions rest of week

PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. – There will be retribution for Roberto Castro’s record-tying 63 Thursday at The Players Championship.

That was the feeling of more than one player at the TPC Sawgrass Stadium Course after Castro tied Fred Couples and Greg Norman for low tournament round. With this hot, dry weather, the tournament staff has a lot of control over course conditions and greens.

“We all said, 'We're in trouble now,'” Jason Bohn said. “Roberto is shooting 63, they're going to suck the moisture out of these bad boys tonight.”

Bohn shot 68 playing with Castro.

Scott Stallings opened the first round with five consecutive birdies before stumbling on his way to a 71.

Nineteen players shot in the 60s in the morning wave alone.

Casey Wittenberg shot 67 but expects that kind of score to become a lot harder to record on the weekend. He expects the course to be toughened up.

“I think it will be drastic,” Wittenberg said. “By Saturday afternoon, it will be about as firm and as fast as they want it to be.”
