Playing the Who to pair with Tiger game

Most important question as we inch closer to the Presidents Cup – after, of course, the Greg Norman-Chris Evert split – will be who U.S. captain Fred Couples pairs with Tiger Woods?

One would think you could pair an Emperor Penguin with the world No. 1 and get .500 ball, but the truth is Woods’ team play record (17-21-2, combined Ryder and Presidents cup four-ball and foursome play) doesn’t match the rest of the resume.

For his part, Woods mentioned Steve Stricker, Jim Furyk, Sean O’Hair and Lucas Glover as potential team mates at the Tour Championship, and of the 16 partners Woods has had in 10 biennial events Furyk has had the most success going 5-3-1.

Anthony Kim has also been mentioned as a potential partner, but considering AK’s success playing alongside Phil Mickelson last year at Valhalla that tandem will likely have to wait for another match.

And if all else fails, Couples could always send Woods out with assistant captain Michael Jordan. The former NBA great would give a lot of shots away – His Airness is a reported single-digit handicap – but if anyone can fire Woods up it is No. 23.
