Playoffs over for some but not season

It’s not quite first to worst, but Nos. 1, 2 and 3 from last year’s final FedEx Cup points list will watch next week’s Tour Championship from the sidelines, perhaps the most ringing endorsement of the Tour’s playoffs.

Neither Vijay Singh (the 2008 FedEx Cup champion), Camilo Villegas (the FedEx runner-up who won the last two playoff events) nor Sergio Garcia (third on the final points list) advanced to East Lake, but that doesn’t mean their season is done.

According to Garcia’s manager, Carlos Rodriguez, the Spaniard will play at least five more events in Europe and Asia, including next month’s Madrid Masters and Castello Masters (both events are in Spain and are followed by the Volvo World Match Play Championship which Garcia hopes to qualify for), the HSBC Champions event in China, where he is the defending champion, the Dubai World Championship Nov. 19-22 and the World Cup in China the next week.

Villegas will play next month’s Presidents Cup, the Volvo Match Play, HSBC and Dubai World Championship, as well as “silly season” events in New Zealand (Kiwi Challenge) and Tiger Woods’ Chevron World Challenge in December.

Singh, however, may be on the shelf for the remainder of 2009. According to Tour officials, Singh is not committed to any of the Fall Finish events and the Fijian has not played in Europe this year.
