Plugged lie great break for Watney

PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. – Nick Watney’s second shot at the par-5 11th hole late Friday afternoon could have gone anywhere – the wrong side of a swale that guards the green, deep into 3-inches of Bermuda rough, anything is possible at TPC Sawgrass.

Instead, the attempt from 237 yards buried deep into its own divot. After consulting with a rules official, Watney was allowed to take a drop for a rare imbedded ball away from the deeper rough and swales and made birdie on his way to a tie for second place at The Players Championship.

“I would have bet a lot of money (against) a ball getting plugged today,” Watney admitted. “It was a great break.”
