Presidential push

Three turns into the Grand Slam season, the road beyond the PGA Championship may be hard for some to envision right now, but not Nick Watney.

Watney, arguably the Tour’s hottest player in the spring, added this week’s Buick Open to his schedule with an eye toward October’s Presidents Cup. Watney, who won the Buick Invitational in February and was second to Phil Mickelson at Doral, has slipped to 14th on the U.S. points list.

A Presidents Cup at San Francisco’s Harding Park is particularly intriguing to the Northern California native who counts the Giants as his favorite baseball team and Fresno State his alma mater. And if all that wasn’t enough to motivate Watney, with this likely being the final Buick Open he could go down as the last player to complete the single season “Buick Slam.”
