Some quick thoughts on Corey Pavin's Thursday fourball pairings:
– Sitting Jim Furyk in the morning makes sense. He comes off the big win at the Tour Championship, which had to be emotionally taxing, and is a better fit in alternate-shot, anyway. The biggest surprise to me is the absence of Hunter Mahan, a superb driver of the ball who can pile up birdies by the bushel when he gets rolling.
– We'll find out about Eldrick Almighty right away. If Woods and Steve Stricker can't beat Ian Poulter and Ross Fisher, the U.S. could have problems.
- – Phil Mickelson-Dustin Johnson was a no-brainer, but I would not have thrown two rookies (Bubba Watson and Jeff Overton) into the last match. The final point of a session can feel like two points if it's the only one left to be had. Momentum galore there.
