Race for U.S. Solheim team heats up with double points at Kraft

RSS

RANCHO MIRAGE, Calif. – The race to make the American Solheim Cup team heats up this week with double points at the Kraft Nabisco Championship giving players a chance to make giant leaps in the standings.

There are 120 points available to an American winner, which may be good enough to vault a player who doesn’t have a single point now to No. 10 in next week’s standings. The 120 points is double what a regular tour victory is worth this year, three times what a regular tour victory was worth in 2012.

Rolex world No. 1 Stacy Lewis leads the American Solheim Cup standings with 696 points, more than double the next best American.

The United States is scheduled to meet the Europeans Aug. 16-18 at Colorado Golf Club in Parker, Colo. The top eight on the U.S. Solheim Cup points list make the team at the conclusion of the Ricoh Women’s British Open. The top two Americans in the Rolex Women’s World Rankings who aren’t already qualified off the points list also automatically make the team. U.S. captain Meg Mallon will also make two picks.

“I’m really looking to see how the players who have been getting points so far this year handle the pressure of being in contention at a major, because that’s really the only thing that can come close to mimicking what it’s like to be at a Solheim Cup,” Mallon said.

If the Solheim Cup were played this week, Lexi Thompson, Jessica Korda and Lizette Salas would make their first team.

Thirteen events remain for qualifying.
