EVIAN LES-BAINS, France ' The Evian Championships debut as a fifth major will be abbreviated.
With Thursdays first round washed out, and with more bad weather forecast over the next three days, the LPGA announced Friday evening that the championship will be shortened to 54 holes.
The plan now is to play the second round Saturday and the final round on Sunday, but theres a strong likelihood the finish will be pushed to Monday. Theres a 40 percent chance of rain on Saturday with an 80 percent chance on Sunday and 80 percent chance again Monday.
While the LPGA considered the possibility of making its cut to the low 50 and ties instead of the low 70 and ties in a bid to complete 72 holes, the tour decided it was best to shorten the event to 54 holes. A cut to the low 50 and ties would have adversely affected the money list with so much at stake based on money winnings. Qualification for the Asian swing closes this coming week. Also, priority lists are affected by money.
There is precedent for shortening majors to 54 holes. The LPGA Championship was shortened to 54 in 1996.
